To promote to the rank of Engineer or Captain, firefighters must undergo an extensive and rigorous testing process administered by the North Zone, a collaborative group of fire agencies across North County. This process ensures that each candidate meets the same high standard of performance and readiness, regardless of department.Chief Gordon led the ceremony, presenting badges to Captain Dave Mitchell and Fire Engineer Christopher Schmit in recognition of their well-earned promotions. Firefighter Willard Grossi was honored for successfully completing his 12-month probationary period, marking his transition to a fully qualified firefighter. Fire Inspector Katie Strickland was also recognized for her contributions to the Fire Prevention Division, which plays a vital role in community safety and education.The ceremony included a special acknowledgment of Captain JJ Siberell, who recently retired after an incredible 30-year career in the fire service. His decades of leadership, service, and mentorship leave a lasting legacy in the department and the Solana Beach community.To conclude the event, Chief Gordon presented Fire Engineer Christopher Schmit with the 2024 Solana Beach Firefighter of the Year Award.
